Diversity inked its name one last time among the best in college journalism, becoming a finalist for the prestigious ACP (Associates Colligate Press) and CMA (College Media Advisors) National Pacemaker Award. "No one should set higher standards for oneself, than oneself," Assistant Professor and faculty advisor Ira David Levy said. Given annually since 1927 for excellence in student journalism, the Pacemaker is awarded based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, and art and graphic design; it is considered the Pulitzer Prize of college journalism. "For 12 years I've dreamed of the student staff reaching this milestone. Now in my 13th year as advisor it's finally happened. I couldn't be more proud. 13 has always been my lucky number," said Levy. The Wright Times (formerly Diversity) staff considers this a rewarding experience. "This is long overdue. I've been with the news organization for two years, so it is a great feeling to know that I was part of why we received the Pacemaker award," Managing Editor Vicki Holda said "We work hard on every issue that we put out and the work has finally paid off." But to the staff, the award, although a great honor, is secondary to their primary goal of producing the best newspaper they can for readers. "I know from firsthand experience that we've worked very hard these past years on the newspaper, and this feels like a real validation of that hard work," Editorial and Opinions Editor Colin Schermerhorn said. This month, 14 representatives from the Wright Times will be attending a conference and training seminar in Washington D.C., where the national Pacemaker recipients will be announced and presented their awards. Competing as finalists in the two-year paper category are 14 two-year colleges from around the nation, three of which are from Illinois.
