Hispanic Heritage Month got a head start at Wright College this year in an attempt to catch up with the rest of the nation. Faculty member Linda Huertas said in the past, Wright celebrated Hispanic Heritage month October 1 - October 31, but "to ensure we start with the traditional date, Wright began September 15 - October 15." During the month span, Latin films, salsa dance lessons and a health awareness fair are scheduled. The Day of the Dead will extend the celebration to November 1. On this day food is offered on an alter to honor the dead." We want to make sure we incorporate The Day of the Dead because it is important to the Latino community." Huertas said. In 1968, Congress authorized one week in September to be the National Hispanic Heritage week. In 1988, Congress expanded it to a month long celebration. Fiestas take place all around the world to celebrate the independence of these Latin American countries. Chicago celebrations occur at the village on 26th street, where family and friends gather to enjoy a full day of entertainment by listening to music, food, games, and fireworks. México and all Central America celebrate their independence by decorating with flags, lights, posters, balloons and painting their faces with the colors of their flags. They relax by hearing the Mariachis sing and watching bullfights, rodeos, and eating spicy food. Wright has celebrated Latin American Heritage Month for 19 years.
