City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) Chancellor, Wayne Watson, introduced a plan requiring students to take four semesters of a foreign language to obtain an Associate in Arts.

The idea made its rounds among many people including Wright College President Dr. Charles Guengerich, who doesn't agree that it should be a requirement, but said, "They should make an enhanced program for the people who are interested in taking a foreign language."

However, Watson "Just want[s] to ensure that our students can be competitive with other students world wide."

While still only an idea CCC students are voicing concerns. Wright student Sarah Mastua said, "I'm not about to comply with a requirement that has nothing to do with my major just because someone wants to make sure his schools are on the map educationally."

Wright student Jamey Lawrence said, "I don't think it's right to make students take classes they don't want to take, especially when the money to pay for the classes are coming out of our pockets. I feel like if I'm going to school and I'm going to pay for it, then I should be able to choose what classes I want and what classes I don't want too."

However, not all students are against Watson's plan. Wright students Michael Santa and Ronald Mayers believe the foreign language plan will be beneficial for the future. "The requirement is a good idea. Students can get out of their own comfort zone and learn something that they normally wouldn't, and who knows, it may even help them some day," Santa said.
Meyers said , "I think people who are multi-lingual are more likely to get a better job than if you only speak English. So I think this language requirement will help us all in the long run."

Daley College President of Faculty Todd Lakin will vote on the proposed requirement along with the faculty at all CCC schools. The vote was scheduled for January 11, but because of undisclosed reasons it was cancelled. The meeting was not rescheduled, but Lakin hopes it will be held this Spring.

If the passed the plan, will be implemented fall of this year.
