One of the assessment projects Wright's Assessment Committee is doing this year is the Foundations of Excellence (FoE). Wright College was selected as part of the 2008-2009 national select cohort of the FoE Policy Center on the First Year. "We are targeting our efforts towards better supporting our first year students, those who have completed 30 semester hours and below" Tenured Instructor, Darlene Attiah, explained.
On November 17 and 18, the Assessment Committee will do a student launch to promote participation in the FoE's New Student Survey. "Their input is really valuable" Associate Dean Marilyn Young said. On these days, they will have a table in campus center where they will be giving away popcorn and bookmarks, explaining what the FoE project is all about, as well as other give-aways. There will also be a contest students can enter to win various prizes including bookstore gift certificates. Students will be asked to explain positive and negative learning experiences, in 25 words or less, and they will be able to drop off their drawing submissions throughout the week in a drop box in room A113.
This effort is to promote participation in the survey, which will be administered in seven of the fifteen most popular first year classes November 19-26. The survey will take 15-20 minutes to complete. "I would like to see the Assessment Committee change its name, we are actually a committee to improve student learning" Young said. FoE is focusing on nine different dimensions of students' experiences: Philosophy, Organization, Learning, Campus Culture, Transitions, All Students, Diversity, Roles and Purposes, and Improvement. Any student interested in being on any of the dimension committees to help to evaluate the new programs should contact Ms. Young or Kevin Lee. They would like one to two students on each committee.
Wright has been assessing student learning and satisfaction for a very long time. Every other year, Wright administers the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSEE), gauging the satisfaction levels of students regarding everything that makes up their college experience. This year's CCSSEE survey revealed that students' overall satisfaction with Wright is at 82 percent. The administration uses this valuable information for purposes of process improvement in failing or less than perfect areas. This year, there is an increase in the staff of advisors.
