Scott Pilgrim has it good, and he'll fight you for it too. Written and illustrated by Bryan Lee O'Malley, the Scott Pilgrim series is one any fan of romance, video games, or indie rock will enjoy.
The series focuses on Scott's abnormal but precious life: living "in-between jobs," dating high schooler Knives Chau, and playing bass in Sex Bob-omb. But then he meets Ramona, a highly-fashionable delivery girl who delivers Amazon.com packages via Scott's dreams. Scott's life becomes a series of trials as he battles The League of Ramona's Evil Exes, a cabal that Scott must defeat in order to keep dating Ramona. Readers will envy Scott because let's face it, dating would be more fun if all you had to do was fight someone's ex Street Fighter-style.
It's not the simplistic art that drives the story, but the dialogue. O'Malley knows how to balance the story and characters without getting lost in the battles and music, making it an indie Canadian love story with a little manga on the side.
With the fifth volume Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Universe coming out in February and film production beginning in March, Scott's life is one you should definitely check out, even if you're dreaming.
