Perfection, Wright's active dance team, gathered petitions from Wright College students to host a homecoming dance on campus. Details remain scarce, but Perfection President Alicia Williams said it might take place in the Atrium, and include food, beverages, performances, and diverse music for different students. Tickets may cost $1.00 for Wright students and $2.00 for non-Wright students, but details still remain tentative.
The dance team plans on hosting the function and other Wright clubs will help, including the Hip Hop club, the Rock Band club, and the Student Government Association (SGA). Williams explained why she chose a homecoming concept and not just a regular dance, she said. "I am also affiliated with the Sports Management Club, and in previous semesters we had a hard time for students to come and support games. A homecoming would bring more support for the basketball games and other sports at Wright as well," she said.
Perfection Vice President Bonte Thompson believes the occasion will bring Wright students a place to socialize and mingle, and relieve tension from schoolwork. " It is for students to get acquainted and I think it would make more students more interested in attending school," Thompson added.
Wright students expressed different views on the homecoming concept. Wright student Nicole Maldonado said, "[the homecoming] sounds too high school. If there is a homecoming there is going to be a lot of drama. People are never happy about the music. No, I wouldn't petition, it sounds stupid." Others like Wright student April Gonzales think differently though. " Yes, I would go to the homecoming. I would probably pay even $5 to $10 for the ticket."
Williams said, " so far we have 500 [petitions], but my goal is to reach 1000. We don't have a set goal, but we want to show [Wight College] President [Charles Guengerich] that there is are a lot of students interested in a homecoming." So far, Guengerich sees no reason why to deny the event if it means more publicity for basketball games. Anyone interested in participating can contact Williams at the Activities Office in Room S134 for petition forms. Meanwhile, the team continues circulating petition papers for students support. "Students need to speak up about [the Homecoming]. I want students to talk to President Guengerich. If everyone speaks up, I believe we can get it accomplished."
