Teachers incorporate the new plan by assigning shared assignments that revolve around the common theme. Chemistry instructor Doris Espiritu said, "Learning biology hand in hand with chemistry would make it more effective because biology is what the student can actually see and relate. Even, without the learning community, I always give chemistry students examples related to life. But, with learning community though, it will be more amplified through examples, linked assignments and group works."
As for expected outcome, the Learning Communities project has been, "functioning in at least 40 percent of the nation's community colleges and continuing to grow in number," according to a research paper by leaders in the project ("The Learning Communities Demonstration: Rational, Sites and Research Design"). Although there is limited data on the effects on academic performance of students taking the program, a study from the paper showed that students enrolled in Learning Communities were, "more satisfied with their overall college experience, experienced a stronger sense of belonging to the college community, and were more engaged in learning." Other small studies showed positive correlations between taking the program and "academic outcomes such as course completion, grades, and persistence in college."
Students can look at the course catalogs for more information on the linked courses. Meanwhile, Li hopes for positive outcomes and continuing growth of the program.
