A few lucky students and faculty members won designated Wright College parking spaces for this Spring semester. From December through January, the Student Government Association (SGA), Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the First Year Center (FYC) committee sponsored the Parking Space Raffle, awarding two students and two faculty members reserved first floor garage parking spaces. Wright College student Huda Amorah won the day shift spot, while fellow Wright student Aileen Pabroa won the evening space. Other winners include staff members Larry Bounaguidi and Norma Carlson. Wright committees will equally distribute collected raffle funds for several scholarship awards and the FYC's maintenance.
The raffle meant to not only help participants with their parking dilemma, but to benefit Wright's student body. SGA, PTK, and FYC will equally divide the accumulated finances for book vouchers, scholarships, and FYC's office renovation. Located in the Arts Building, FYC focuses on assisting new Wright students to adjust to college life.
Another beneficiary of the Parking Space Raffle, SGA's Juanita B. Murden scholarship will set its funds to provide textbooks for students this coming fall semester. "The fund is named after the mother of Wright College's Dean of Student Services, Romell Murden. The scholarships are to recognize Mrs. Murden's love of education," according to the SGA and PTK Parking Space Raffle poster. PTK will also donate some of its collected funds to the Hites Scholarship Fund-an international scholarship fund providing continuing education tuition.
When asked what constituted the huge parking delays leading to the parking raffle sponsorship, English Professor and SGA faculty adviser Jane Wagoner said, "The parking delays are connected directly to the most popular class times: early mornings and late afternoon."
Future possibilities of another Parking Space Raffle are in consideration, however specific details are scarce. Wagoner added that, "The raffle committee will review the procedures from last fall and make suggestions about how to increase participation and to improve the raffle process. Any new procedures will be implemented in the sales for fall 2010 parking spaces."
